Are Men Really Stronger Than Women

Arnold Schwarzenegger found out how strong he was shortly after he won his first Mr. Universe title. He was asked by a friend to hold a baby – he said after five minutes he thought his arms were going to drop off.

The average mother holds her baby for hours every day and has an endurance ability that is way beyond that of most men, (John Terilli’s words).By understanding and working with different muscle fibres- fast and slow twitch it is possible to create a blueprint for a woman that will last the rest of her life.

The proprioceptors in the skeletal muscles are in simple terms the things that send the messages to the cerebellum about the amount of effort needed in a movement as well as the relative position of one part of the body to another. They, for example, allow you to learn to walk across a room in the dark, or any other physical task.

New tasks can be learned-that’s a given. You get good at things by practising-repeating the movement burns a pathway to the brain so the task eventually becomes second nature. Women merely need to learn to tap into that incredible strength that allows them to hold a baby for hours or endure a pregnancy. Once learned, muscle memory will retain it for life.

“Toning is a myth! There is no such thing – it’s a meaningless term that gym owners came up with to sell memberships to women who were too frightened to go near a weight in case it made them look like Arnold Schwarzenegger.”
John was passionate when he was saying this to me; and although I laughed at the time, I thought about it a bit later and realised it was not an exaggeration.

What is ‘toning’ It’s merely working the muscle to give it shape and size and losing enough body fat to see the definition. Sounds like the same thing your average body builder is out to achieve.

There’s this whole mystery surrounding ‘toning’ as though it’s something separate, secret and completely different to anything else that takes place in a gym. It reinforces a stereotype- you’ll look like a front row forward if you so much as look at a dumb bell darling! So be very careful and only do women’s things and don’t go in a weights room or take a protein supplement – it will only make you unfeminine.


The women who do bulk up put so much effort into it, it is unbelievable. It’s occupies their every waking moment and they are women who are driven and compelled, and also genetically predisposed to look like that. They are the exception rather than the rule and they are the ones the media sensationalise because it makes good television.

Training with weights and using bodybuilding techniques is the best thing for most women. You’ll lose fat, get shapely legs and arms, a flat stomach and a beautiful butt. You’ll feel good about yourself at the beach and anywhere else for that matter.

Broadway Gym is fast becoming a Mecca for enlightened women. Most times of the day you can go to the free weights room and see fifty percent of the patrons are female.

The last time I remember talking to a woman about weight training, was my lymphatic draining specialist who was in her 70s. She was well aware of the benefits of resistance and weight training for the elderly. She got straight to the point as she got deeper into her therapy, and asked if I could recommend a book on basic weight training for women. She told me that the training she was receiving at a local gym from a young personal trainer was not what she was after and not of any benefit and she did feel any of the effects she should.

This is often the case in gyms where trainers use generic programs that they learned in  PT school. I assured Rosemary that at Broadway Gym we could help her as what she was after was such a simple request. She was an extremely busy woman who also worked at a college and was putting together a university course. What she needed was so simple and basic that I was able to show her one exercise for every muscle group of the body. I assured her that all she needed was one session with me at Broadway Gym and the task was completed.

Women are sometimes confused as to the level of exercise they should do and spend endless hours doing ineffective routines – time which could be better spent. Most women could benefit from the simple program I showed Rosemary. Basic weight training and a good nutrition program- we’ll go into more details on another post.

A woman who may be overweight with joint, back and hip problems, depression from fluctuating hormones can simply be reverse all this and maintain good health and well being from three weekly sessions of basic weight training exercises. Many women feel the they have to get in shape before they go to the gym and they don’t seem to realise that is the whole reason for going. They also seem to mistakenly believe that they need to lose weight before they can begin resistance training when, in fact its resistance training that will speed up the metabolic rate faster than hours of cardio.

In Rosemary’s case she took to it like a duck to water because of her background and she benefited more than a woman half her age because of her mindset.

For women who are not so sure of themselves we a group fitness Hard Body Class which will be launched in September. It systematically works every muscle in the body in a structure routine and you will know exactly what you’re getting every time you go to the class. We also have a pin loaded circuit located on the upper level of Broadway Gym next to the female’ dressing room that we call the Easy Start Area. It’s perfect for beginners and busy people.
